The Nine Arches Bridge in Ella is one of the easiest sights to add to a stay in the hill country. The bridge, also known as the Bridge in the Sky, is one of the most photographed landmarks in the region. It sits among forest and hills and combines railway history with a pretty setting.

• Location: Situated between Ella and Demodara, Sri Lanka, the Nine Arches Bridge is surrounded by lush tea plantations and misty mountains, offering scenic views.
• Name Origin: The name “Nine Arches Bridge” refers to the nine arches that support the structure, creating a striking visual element. It is sometimes called the “Bridge in the Sky” due to its elevated position, often surrounded by mist, offering an ethereal sight.
• Elevation and Dimensions: The bridge is about 91 meters long and 24 meters high. Sources put it at roughly 945 meters above sea level.
• History and Construction: Who built the bridge is uncertain: sources credit different people, and there is no documented evidence for the local tradition. Sources also give the completion date as either 1919 or 1921. The bridge is built from stone, brick and cement and is said to have been built without steel, apart from the rails.
• Trains: Around six trains a day pass over the bridge, according to the timetables travel sites publish. Trains are often late, and services on the hill-country line have been disrupted at times, so check the current schedule on the Sri Lanka Railways website.
• Drone Flights: Drones are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL). The rules I found are in the drone section further down.

Why Visit the Nine Arches Bridge, in Ella?

The Nine Arches Bridge in Ella is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, and for good reason. If you’re in Ella, it’s a must-see destination that perfectly captures the region’s breathtaking beauty. Surrounded by lush tea plantations and misty mountains, the bridge is a good example of Sri Lanka’s colonial railway history. The main draw is watching a train cross it, and the green hills around it make for good photos. It gets crowded when a train is due, so I would not count on a quiet moment here.

Ella itself offers much more than the Nine Arches Bridge. From scenic hikes like Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock to cozy cafes and boutique hotels, this charming hill town combines adventure with relaxation. Ella Rock is the other popular hike, but I did not do it on the press trip, so this guide does not cover it.

When is The Best Time to Visit the Nine Arches Bridge, in Ella?

The Nine Arches Bridge in Ella is a stunning sight that can be visited year-round, thanks to the region’s generally pleasant climate. The ideal time to visit is from January to March when the weather is at its driest and most stable. During these months, you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the bridge and its surroundings, with clear skies making it perfect for photography and exploring the area.

From April to June and October to December, expect more rainfall, which can create slippery conditions around the bridge and its approach. The rain keeps the hills green, and low cloud can make for moody photos. I visited in October 2024, during the rainy months, and the bridge was still crowded despite the drizzle.

Outside the January to March peak the bridge is probably less busy, but I do not have visitor figures to confirm that.

How to Get to the Nine Arches Bridge?

Getting to the Nine Arches Bridge depends on where you’re starting from. Colombo or Kandy. Both locations offer several travel options to reach Ella, and from there, the bridge is just a short hike or a tuk-tuk ride away. Here’s a breakdown of your options, with approximate times from listings. 12Go is a partner of this site and I have not used it. From Colombo to Ella Private Car/Taxi

• Time: 5 to 6 hours
• Details: A private car or taxi offers the most comfort and flexibility. It’s ideal if you’re traveling with a group, have a lot of luggage, or prefer a direct route. For a more adventurous option, consider a tuk-tuk ride, though it’s slower and less comfortable.

Train

• Time: about 8 to 10 hours
• Details: Some trains run through from Colombo Fort to Badulla, and the Kandy to Ella stretch is the scenic part, through tea plantations and forest. Book tickets in advance, as this route is popular.

Public Bus

• Time: 6 to 7 hours
• Details: Buses from Colombo’s Pettah Bus Terminal to Ella are budget-friendly but may be crowded and less comfortable. Be prepared for possible delays.

Private Shuttle/Tour

• Time: 5 to 6 hours
• Details: Many guided tours include private transport to Ella, allowing you to relax while someone else handles the logistics.

From Kandy to Ella Private Car/Taxi

• Time: 3 to 3.5 hours
• Details: A comfortable and direct option, the private car or taxi offers flexibility and speed, especially if you want to travel at your own pace or with others.

Train

• Time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours
• Details: The train from Kandy to Ella runs through the hill country and is one of the best-known scenic rides in Sri Lanka.

Public Bus

• Time: 3.5 to 4.5 hours
• Details: The public bus option is more economical but may be less comfortable due to long distances and crowded conditions, especially during peak hours.

Private Shuttle/Tour

• Time: 3 to 3.5 hours
• Details: A private shuttle or tour provides a hassle-free experience with added comfort. Ideal for those who want to focus on the journey without worrying about logistics.

Once You’re in Ella

The Nine Arches Bridge is a short tuk-tuk ride or a 30-40 minute hike from Ella town. You can either follow the path through lush greenery to the bridge or ask your tuk-tuk driver to drop you at the closest access point for a quicker walk.

Hiking from Ella to Little Adam’s Peak and Nine Arches Bridge (Round Trip)

A circular hike from Ella to Little Adam’s Peak and then down to the Nine Arches Bridge combines the two stops in one route. I did the two on separate days, so the figures below come from a Wikiloc track of a similar loop, not from my own track.

• Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
• Total Elevation Change: 630m | +315m | -315m
• Altitude: Lowest point: 976m (Nine Arches Bridge). Highest point: 1,141m (Little Adam’s Peak Summit)
• Difficulty: Easy-Moderate. The route is manageable for most hikers, with a moderate level of fitness required for the elevation gain and descent.

These picks come from research and listings, not from my own stays. I stayed at Ella Mount Heaven during the press trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board and found it a bit rundown. Luxury:

• EKHO Ella - Near the Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak, with views of the Ella Gap. The boutique hotel has 14 rooms, including Junior Suites with private Jacuzzis.

Boutique:

• Arawe Retreat – A renovated 150-year-old cottage with views of rice paddies.
• Tea Cabins – Rooms, a garden and a pool, a short walk from the Nine Arch Bridge and Ella Spice Garden.

Mid-range:

• Green Nature Paradise Ella – Near Nine Arch Bridge, with views and breakfast on offer.
• The Black Stone – A guesthouse with a roof terrace and easy access to Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak.

Budget:

• Eagle View Villa – A budget option with views and breakfast, about 25 minutes from Ella Town Center.
• Ella Mount View Guest Inn – Close to Nine Arch Bridge, with free WiFi, on-site dining, a garden and bike rental.

Hostels:

• Wild Bee Hostel – A hostel near Ella’s high street with vegetarian breakfast and mountain views.
• Down Town Hostel Ella – A budget option with organized activities, close to the railway tracks and Ella Rock.

Where to Eat and Drink near the Nine Arches Bridge?

The cafes and restaurants are in Ella town, so that is where to eat before or after the bridge. The only Ella restaurant I ate at was the buffet at the Oak Ray Ella Gap Hotel, after Little Adam’s Peak. The places below are ones I have not tried.

Listings mention Cafe Chill for local and international dishes, Matey Hut for roti and kottu, Rainbow Inn for smoothie bowls and vegan salads, and MozzarElla by Nero Kitchen for pizza.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for local vendors as you explore. They sell refreshing drinks, snacks, and other treats, which are great for a quick pick-me-up!

Best Things To Do near the Nine Arches Bridge

If you’re looking for the best things to do near the Nine Arches Bridge, you’re in for a treat with several amazing spots nearby. Visit Ravana Falls, a majestic waterfall, or Diyaluma Falls, one of the tallest in Sri Lanka, which is known for its natural pools at the top. I passed by Diyaluma Falls on the press trip. Take a trip to Nil Diya Pokuna, a remarkable natural pool inside a cave that requires a bit of effort to reach, usually with the help of a local tuk-tuk guide.

You can also visit the serene Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, explore the historic Ravana Cave steeped in local lore, or experience the thrill of the Flying Ravana Zipline. For hiking enthusiasts, the Little Adam’s Peak trail is a must-try for its easy path and rewarding views, while the Ella Rock trail offers stunning vistas for those seeking a more challenging trek. On the press trip I also visited the Halpe Tea Plantation and Factory, which has its own guide. Of the places above, on the press trip I did not visit Nil Diya Pokuna, ride the Flying Ravana Zipline or hike Ella Rock.

Where to Catch the Train to Ella?

To catch the train to Ella, you’ll need to head to Colombo Fort Railway Station, the main train station in Colombo. From there, you can board a train heading toward Badulla, with Ella being one of the key stops on the route. The journey from Colombo to Ella is famous for its stunning scenery, especially as you approach the hill country.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Kandy, trains on the Badulla line run all the way to Ella station, so there is no need to change. Nanu Oya is the station for Nuwara Eliya, not for Ella. Trains from both Colombo and Kandy offer amazing views, and if you’re lucky enough to get a window seat, it’s considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world!

Make sure to check train schedules here to ensure you get the train you want. You can book either online, with 12Go or at the train station, but it’s always better to secure your seat beforehand.

How Much is the Train to Ella?

Approximate train fares from Colombo to Ella and Kandy to Ella, with a rough conversion to USD. Fares change, so check the current fares: Colombo to Ella:

• Third Class: Approx. Rs. 470 to Rs. 600 (~$1.50 to $2 USD)
• Second Class: Approx. Rs. 900 to Rs. 1,500 (~$3 to $5 USD)
• First Class: Approx. Rs. 1,500 (~$5 USD)

Kandy to Ella:

• Third Class: Approx. Rs. 270 to Rs. 850 (~$0.90 to $3 USD)
• Second Class: Approx. Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 (~$1.50 to $3.50 USD)
• First Class: Approx. Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 (~$3.50 to $5 USD)

Return Tickets:

• While Sri Lanka Railways doesn’t offer a discount on return tickets, purchasing two one-way tickets is common. The prices would be doubled compared to a one-way ticket.

How to Reserve the Train to Ella?

It’s not mandatory to reserve a train to Ella, but I highly recommend doing so, especially during peak tourist seasons. While Colombo to Ella and Kandy to Ella routes are quite popular, trains can fill up quickly, especially the Second and First Class compartments, which offer more comfort and better views.

Third Class seats are usually available, but they can be crowded, and you may not have a guaranteed seat.

Reserving in advance through the official Sri Lanka Railways website or 12Go ensures a guaranteed seat and a more comfortable journey.

If you’re traveling on a busy holiday or during high season, it’s definitely a good idea to book ahead. You can also purchase tickets at the station, but I recommend getting there early to secure your spot if you’re not reserving online.

Is the Walk to the Nine Arches Bridge Difficult?

The walk to the Nine Arches Bridge is short and easy for most visitors. I walked the trail from the point where the shuttle left the group. As general advice, hiking guides note that leeches can be active on damp trails around Ella, especially in the rainy months, so closed shoes and long socks are a sensible precaution.

What Clothing Should i Bring to do the Nine Arches Bridge?

The walk to the bridge is short and easy, but a little preparation helps, especially in the rainy months when the trail can be wet. This is a general gear list with partner links. These are suggestions, not products I have tested. Essentials:

• Breathable T-shirt (Tech or Merino)
• Waterproof Jacket (lightweight, for possible rain)
• Puffer Jacket (for the cooler early mornings)
• Shorts or Pants (depending on weather)
• Hiking Shoes (comfortable, sturdy footwear)
• Backpack (small daypack, around 20-30 liters)
• Sunglasses (UV protection)
• Cap (or a beanie if it’s cold)

Can you Fly Drones at the Nine Arches Bridge?

In Sri Lanka, drone usage is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL). I did not find specific rules for the Nine Arches Bridge, so the general drone regulations apply:

• The maximum height is 150 feet (about 46 meters) above ground level.
• Operators must maintain a visual line of sight with their drone.
• Drones are prohibited near airports, military zones, and no-fly zones.
• Flying drones at night requires prior authorization.
• Insurance is required for camera drones over 200 grams.

Drones must be registered with the CAASL, and foreign visitors can get a temporary registration. Check the latest rules at caa.lk before you fly. During our trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, we had all the necessary permits and authorizations to fly in most areas. At the Nine Arches Bridge, for example, the police officer came to check our papers, as we were four people flying drones. The girls from the Tourism Board kindly showed the officer the relevant documents to ensure everything was in order. For those planning to fly independently, it’s always a good idea to check with local authorities and make sure you have the required permissions for your specific location.

My Experience at the Nine Arches Bridge

As part of the press trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, we arrived in Ella after visiting Colombo, the Sinharaja Rainforest, and Ratnapura, the City of Gems. Our goal was to explore the hill country, starting with a visit to Diyaluma and Ravana Falls. Next, we headed to the Nine Arches Bridge, and let me tell you, it was an amazing experience. Despite the crowds, it was still a thrill to see it up close. Since we were traveling with the tourism board, we had all the necessary drone permits, and it turned into quite the adventure to capture the best shots, especially when the famous train passed over the bridge.

When we arrived, a light drizzle started, and we weren’t sure if we’d be able to fly the drones. But we decided to go for it anyway. With at least four drones in the air, it felt like a military operation. Each drone operator was planning their shots carefully, making sure not to overlap with others and avoiding crashes, all while keeping an eye on the rain. The train was running late, and our batteries were getting low, so we decided to land the drones before it passed. Just as we were about to pack up, a police officer started walking in our direction. Thankfully, the ladies from the Tourism Board were quick to greet him and show him our papers. At the same time, we had Ricardo check the train’s timing. Once he gave us the signal, we launched the drones again and managed to get all the shots we needed before the train stopped on the bridge.

After the drone shots, we had some extra time since the train stopped for at least 15 minutes to let tourists take pictures with it. We grounded our drones and went up close to get the famous shots, leaning on the train door. It wasn’t the usual moving photo with the green scenery, but it was still a great imitation. It was fun that the train driver actually stopped specifically for the tourists. And the best part? It’s completely free! People had fun snapping pictures, until the driver honked the horn, signaling it was time to move. We stepped aside, and the train continued its journey.

With the rain picking up and the day coming to a close, we decided it was time to head back to our shuttle. It was a fun yet stressful adventure, and I was glad we got to experience so much at the Nine Arches Bridge.
