Where to Stay in Quito?

Quito is a long, narrow city. The main places to stay are the Historical Center, La Mariscal, La Floresta, La Carolina and Bellavista, with valleys such as Cumbayá, Tumbaco and Valle de Los Chillos farther out. Here are the main areas and what each is known for.

Historical Center: Quito’s historic center was one of the first sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list, in 1978. Plaza Grande (Independence Square), the Carondelet Palace, the Basilica del Voto Nacional and La Compañía de Jesús church are here. It has boutique hotels in old mansions, such as Casa Gangotena and Hotel Plaza Grande, as well as hostels, apartments and small guesthouses. As in any large city, take care at night.

La Mariscal: La Mariscal is north of the historic center and is the main nightlife area, with bars, restaurants, cafés, galleries and clubs. Plaza Foch, also called Plaza El Quinde, is its center, with many bars, restaurants and discos. Take care at night around Plaza Foch.

La Floresta: La Floresta has murals, independent cinemas, theaters, galleries, cafés and bars, and it is within walking distance of La Mariscal and the historic center. Guápulo, with its viewpoint and church, is close by. It has fewer hotels than the other areas, mostly on Airbnb and along Avenida 12 de Octubre.

La Carolina: La Carolina is Quito’s financial district, built around Parque La Carolina, which covers about 67 hectares and has the Quito Botanical Garden and the Museum of Natural Sciences. It has shopping centers and public transport, and it is wise to take care at night.

Bellavista: Bellavista is a residential district with fewer hotels than the historic center or La Mariscal. La Capilla del Hombre, the museum of the painter Oswaldo Guayasamín, is here, at the foot of the Guangüiltagua Metropolitan Park.

Hotel Casona 1914, formerly La Casona D’Alameda Boutique Hotel, is a neoclassical mansion in the La Alameda sector. It was designed by the architect Francisco Durini Cáceres for Dr. Antonio Sáenz Marino in the early 1900s and restored by the Morán Baldeón family. It has nine suites, each named after an Ecuadorian tourist attraction, a back garden, terraces and a roofed central courtyard.

The restoration uncovered original sketches by Durini Cáceres and traces of earlier inhabitants. The rooms follow an Andalusian style. At 129$ for two it is rated 9.5.
