The hotel also hosts meetings, conferences and weddings, and has a membership scheme, the Democratic Mountain Community, with benefits for members. At 931$ for two it is the most expensive hotel on this list, with a 9.2 rating.

Where to Stay in Zermatt

Zermatt is a small car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn, so where you stay mostly decides how close you are to the lifts and the railway station. Here are the main options.

City Center: Best for First-Time Visitors

Only electric vehicles and horse-drawn carriages are allowed on the village streets, and electric taxis and buses run through the center, so most of it is easy to walk. It has restaurants, bars and shops, and hotels from luxury to hostels.

Near the Lifts: Best for Skiers

Three ways up the mountain start in or next to the village: the Sunnegga funicular, the Gornergrat railway from Zermatt station and the Matterhorn Express gondola. A hotel close to the one you will use most saves a walk with ski boots or hiking gear.

Above the Village: Best for Views

A few hotels sit above the village and are reached on the Gornergrat railway. Riffelalp Resort 2222m is about 15 minutes up, and 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, at 3,100 meters, is about 33 minutes up and is described as the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps.

Täsch: Best for Arriving by Car

Täsch is about 5.6 km from Zermatt. Cars stop there because Zermatt is car-free, and a shuttle train covers the rest in about 12 minutes, every 20 minutes for most of the day. Täsch has hotels and apartments.

The Omnia is on a rock above Zermatt, and guests reach the lobby through a tunnel and an elevator.

The wellness center uses products from Aesop and Farfalla and is for hotel guests only.

The listing names Tony Rudolph as Head Chef, with seasonal Alpine ingredients and a vegetarian concept that can be complemented with fish or meat. Rooms have balconies and photographic wall art, and some have open fireplaces, oriel bay window baths, cedar tubs or private saunas. At 536$ for two it is rated 9.6.

3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat is at 3,100 meters above sea level and is described as the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps. It is reached by the Gornergrat railway, about 33 minutes from Zermatt.

The two restaurants are vis-à-vis, with classic Swiss cuisine, and Panorama self-service.

Rooms and Alpine suites have views of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, and you can start the day on the slopes. At 491$ for two it is the cheapest of the luxury hotels here, with a 9.1 rating, the lowest of the five.

Swiss Alpine Hotel Allalin is in the center of Zermatt. It was built in 1978 and has hand-carved wood details inside.

Hotel Zermama is in the center of Zermatt and has 29 rooms, from single rooms to suites with Matterhorn views.

It opened in December 2019. At 282$ for two it is rated 9.0, the lowest rating among the standard hotels here.

Naco Aparthotel by Arca

The Naco Aparthotel opened in December 2019, with modern rooms and mountain views. The Rooftop Suite sleeps up to 8 and has a living-bedroom, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchenette and a south-facing balcony with elevator access and Matterhorn views.

For smaller groups there is a Junior Rooftop Suite for four and a 2-room apartment for four, both with balconies.

The spa has a brine swimming pool, an aroma steam bath, a Finnish sauna and a Kneipp basin, and outside guests are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. At 265$ for two it is rated 9.3.

Zermatt Budget Rooms

Zermatt Budget Rooms are in the basement of the 4-star Alpen Resort Hotel, 300 meters from Zermatt railway station. Guests can use the hotel’s facilities: a daily breakfast buffet, sports and wellness facilities, the Whisky a Go Go Bar and the Sinatra Smoking Lounge.

Rooms are Budget “Duo” (two single beds), “Triple” (three single beds) and “Quatro” (two double beds and a kitchenette).

The Alpen Resort has a new spa area, the Matterhorn restaurant with Swiss and international food, a lounge bar, a glassed-in Sinatra Smoking Lounge with Matterhorn views, a fitness room, a tennis court and gaming equipment. At 261$ for two it is the cheapest of the standard hotels here, rated 9.6.

Chalet A la Casa is on a sunny north-east slope in Zermatt, with views of the village and the Matterhorn. The two-story chalet has four double rooms, three bathrooms, a living room with a fireplace, an open kitchen, a private sauna, an outdoor jacuzzi, a heated terrace and a ski room with a boot dryer.

Wi-Fi, cable TV and a telephone are included. In winter you can ski up to the front door. An elevator connects the chalet to the riverside, and it is a short walk from the center.
