Ella is a small town in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, known for its tea plantations, mountain views, hikes and the scenic train from Kandy. It is one of the most visited places in the hill country.

Why Visit Ella, Sri Lanka?

Ella is a nice stop in Sri Lanka’s hill country, but it is very touristy, and personally I liked Galle and Yala more. What I liked about Ella was the vegetation, the things to do around it and the cafes and restaurants.

The area around Ella has tea plantations, mountains and waterfalls. The two most popular walks are Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge. Ella Rock is a longer, harder hike that I did not do on the press trip.

The town has modern cafes, restaurants and boutique hotels that make it easy to relax after a day of exploring. I had a cup of Sri Lankan tea at the Halpe tea plantation factory.

If you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka’s hill country, Ella is an easy base for the sights described in this guide.

When is The Best Time to Visit Ella, Sri Lanka?

Ella, Sri Lanka, enjoys a cool and pleasant climate year-round due to its location in the hill country. However, the best time to visit Ella is generally from January to March, when the weather is at its driest and most predictable. During this period, you can comfortably explore Ella’s iconic attractions, such as Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arches Bridge, and Ella Rock, without worrying about sudden rain showers.

The months from April to June and October to December typically bring more rainfall, which can make trekking trails slippery and might disrupt outdoor plans. That said, the rain keeps the landscapes green. I visited in October 2024, in the rainy months, and had a light drizzle at the Nine Arches Bridge.

If you’re a tea enthusiast, plan around the weather described above. I did not find a reliable source for a best month to see the plantations.

How to Get from Colombo to Ella?

If you’re traveling from Colombo to Ella, there are several options to consider, each with its own set of pros and cons. Here’s a breakdown of the available transportation options and estimated travel times (from listings; 12Go is a partner of this site and I have not used it):

Private Car/Taxi:

• Time: 5 to 6 hours
• Details: This is the most comfortable and convenient option, offering flexibility and a direct route to Ella. If you’re traveling with a group or have a lot of luggage, it’s definitely the best choice. A tuktuk ride is also possible for a more adventurous journey, but it will take longer and may not be as comfortable.

Public Bus:

• Time: 6 to 7 hours
• Details: Buses from Pettah Bus Terminal in Colombo to Ella are an affordable option. However, be prepared for possible delays and crowded conditions. It’s definitely a more budget-friendly choice, but comfort and timeliness may vary.

Train:

• Time: about 8 to 10 hours
• Details: Some trains run through from Colombo Fort to Badulla on the Badulla line, and the Kandy to Ella stretch is the scenic part. Ella has its own station on that line, so you do not need to change at Nanu Oya, which serves Nuwara Eliya. (Check schedules at the station or when you book)

Private Tour (Shuttle):

• Time: 5 to 6 hours
• Details: If you’re on a guided tour, transportation is often included, and you’ll enjoy a hassle-free ride to Ella. This is a great option if you prefer to sit back and relax while someone else handles the logistics.

How to Get Around Ella, Sri Lanka?

Ella is a small, compact town, and many visitors walk around it. I mostly moved around by shuttle during the press trip, so the walking routes to Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and the town center are manageable on foot according to guides, but I have not checked them myself.

Tuk-tuks are also available for shorter trips to places like Ravana Falls or Ella Rock.

If you’re planning to head further out or want a bit more comfort, you can always opt for a private vehicle or local bus.

Is Ella Safe for Tourists?

I never felt uneasy during my time in Sri Lanka, and Ella looked like a safe, welcoming destination for tourists.

Ella is one of the most touristy spots in Sri Lanka, and it looked safe to me for that reason: the town is set up for visitors, with restaurants, bars and hotels, and the many tourists add to the sense of safety. I did not spend much time in the town, so this is based on what I saw.

That said, it’s always wise to take basic precautions – keep an eye on your belongings in busy spots and avoid isolated areas after dark. Even in a popular and safe town like Ella, staying mindful is important.

I felt comfortable during my stay in Ella. If you’re planning to venture off the beaten path – perhaps to Nil Diya Pokuna or the Ravana Cave – having travel insurance is always a good idea. Best Things To Do in Ella, Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Ella, you’re in for a treat with several amazing spots nearby. You can visit Ravana Falls, a majestic waterfall, or Diyaluma Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, known for its natural pools at the top. I passed by Diyaluma Falls on the press trip. Take a trip to Nil Diya Pokuna, a remarkable natural pool inside a cave that requires a bit of effort to reach, usually with a local tuk-tuk guide. You can also visit the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, which I toured with a monk on the press trip, explore the historic Ravana Cave steeped in local lore, or experience the thrill of the Flying Ravana Zipline. For hiking enthusiasts, the Little Adam’s Peak Hike is a must-try for its easy trail and rewarding views, while the Ella Rock trail offers stunning vistas for those looking for a more challenging trek. The Nine Arches Bridge is a must-see for its iconic beauty. I also visited the Halpe Tea Plantation and Factory on the press trip, and it has its own guide. On the press trip I did not visit Nil Diya Pokuna, ride the Flying Ravana Zipline or hike Ella Rock, so those come from research.

Best Things To Do near Ella, Sri Lanka

If you’re willing to venture a bit further, Sri Lanka has a wide variety of incredible attractions. You can explore the UNESCO-listed Sinharaja Rainforest, home to unique flora and fauna. In Ratnapura, also known as the City of Gems, you can tour gemstone mines and explore the picturesque hill country. For a more urban experience, Colombo, the capital city, offers a blend of modern attractions, markets, and historical landmarks. If you’re in the mood for more adventure, head south to Yala National Park for a safari, where you can spot elephants, leopards, and more. Coastal lovers should not miss Galle and Galle Fort, which combine stunning coastal views with colonial charm. Lastly, Sigiriya, with its ancient rock fortress, provides both a historical and panoramic experience, showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich heritage. I visited Colombo, Sinharaja, Ratnapura, Yala and Galle on the same press trip; the Sigiriya description is research.

Where to Eat and Drink in Ella?

The cafes and restaurants are in Ella town. The only Ella restaurant I ate at was the buffet at the Oak Ray Ella Gap Hotel, after Little Adam’s Peak. Listings mention Cafe Chill for local and international dishes, Matey Hut for roti and kottu, Rainbow Inn for smoothie bowls and vegan salads, and MozzarElla by Nero Kitchen for pizza, but I have not tried them.

Throughout the area, you’ll find vendors walking around selling refreshments, snacks, and local treats, making it easy to stay refreshed while exploring.

Where to Stay in Ella, Sri Lanka?

If you’re planning a trip to Ella, choosing the right accommodation can make your stay even more memorable. This charming hill town offers a wide range of options, from luxurious resorts with stunning views of the surrounding valleys to budget-friendly homestays that provide a cozy, authentic experience.

These picks come from research and listings, not from my own stays. I stayed at Ella Mount Heaven during the press trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board and found it a bit rundown. Luxury:

• 98 Acres Resort & Spa – On a tea estate, close to Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak, with an outdoor pool.
• EKHO Ella - Near the Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak, with views of the Ella Gap. The boutique hotel has 14 rooms, including Junior Suites with private Jacuzzis.

Boutique:

• Arawe Retreat – A renovated 150-year-old cottage with views of rice paddies.
• Tea Cabins – Rooms, a garden and a pool, a short walk from the Nine Arch Bridge and Ella Spice Garden.

Mid-range:

• Green Nature Paradise Ella – Near Nine Arch Bridge, with views and breakfast on offer.
• The Black Stone – A guesthouse with a roof terrace and easy access to Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak.

Budget:

• Eagle View Villa – A budget option with views and breakfast, about 25 minutes from Ella Town Center.
• Ella Mount View Guest Inn – Close to Nine Arch Bridge, with free WiFi, on-site dining, a garden and bike rental.

Hostels:

• Wild Bee Hostel – A hostel near Ella’s high street with vegetarian breakfast and mountain views.
• Down Town Hostel Ella – A budget option with organized activities, close to the railway tracks and Ella Rock.

Where to Catch the Train to Ella?

To catch the train to Ella, you’ll need to head to Colombo Fort Railway Station, the main train station in Colombo. From there, you can board a train heading toward Badulla, with Ella being one of the key stops on the route. The journey from Colombo to Ella is famous for its stunning scenery, especially as you approach the hill country.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Kandy, trains on the Badulla line run all the way to Ella station, so there is no need to change. Nanu Oya is the station for Nuwara Eliya, not for Ella. Trains from both Colombo and Kandy offer amazing views, and if you’re lucky enough to get a window seat, it’s considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world!

Make sure to check train schedules before you go to be sure you get the train you want. You can book either online or at the train station, but it’s always better to secure your seat beforehand.

How Much is the Train to Ella?

Approximate train fares from Colombo to Ella and Kandy to Ella, with a rough conversion to USD. Fares change, so check the current fares: Colombo to Ella:

• Third Class: Approx. Rs. 470 to Rs. 600 (~$1.50 to $2 USD)
• Second Class: Approx. Rs. 900 to Rs. 1,500 (~$3 to $5 USD)
• First Class: Approx. Rs. 1,500 (~$5 USD)

Kandy to Ella:

• Third Class: Approx. Rs. 270 to Rs. 850 (~$0.90 to $3 USD)
• Second Class: Approx. Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 (~$1.50 to $3.50 USD)
• First Class: Approx. Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 (~$3.50 to $5 USD)

Return Tickets:

• While Sri Lanka Railways doesn’t offer a discount on return tickets, purchasing two one-way tickets is common. The prices would be doubled compared to a one-way ticket.

These prices are subject to change, so I recommend checking on the Sri Lanka Railways website or in 12Go for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Do i Need to Reserve the Train to Ella?

It’s not mandatory to reserve a train to Ella, but I highly recommend doing so, especially during peak tourist seasons. While Colombo to Ella and Kandy to Ella routes are quite popular, trains can fill up quickly, especially the Second and First Class compartments, which offer more comfort and better views.

Third Class seats are usually available, but they can be crowded, and you may not have a guaranteed seat.

Reserving in advance through the official Sri Lanka Railways website or 12Go ensures a guaranteed seat and a more comfortable journey.

If you’re traveling on a busy holiday or during high season, it’s definitely a good idea to book ahead. You can also purchase tickets at the station, but I recommend getting there early to secure your spot if you’re not reserving online.

My Experience in Ella

As part of the press trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, we arrived in Ella after visiting Colombo, the Sinharaja Rainforest, and Ratnapura, the City of Gems.

Our goal was to explore the hill country, starting with a visit to Diyaluma and Ravana Falls. Next, we visited the Nine Arches Bridge, which was an amazing experience. Although it was crowded, it was still a delight.

Since we were traveling with the tourism board, we had drone permits, and it became quite the adventure to capture the best shots we could as a group, especially of the famous train crossing the bridge.

The Nine Arches Bridge

To add to the excitement, as we arrived, a light drizzle began, and we weren’t sure if we’d be able to fly the drones. Despite that, we decided to go ahead. With at least four drones in the air, it felt like a military operation. Each drone operator was planning their shots carefully, making sure not to overlap with others and avoid crashes, all while keeping an eye on the rain.

The train was running late, so we were starting to run low on battery power. We decided to land the drones before the train arrived, sending Ricardo to check the timing from the bridge. Once he gave us the signal, we launched the drones again and managed to capture all the shots before the train stopped on the bridge.

It was a fun yet stressful operation. As soon as we finished, the rain picked up significantly, and we quickly retrieved the drones. After the Nine Arches Bridge, our day came to an end.

The Highlights near Ella

The next morning, we woke up early to catch the sunrise over Ella Gap before hiking to Little Adam’s Peak. Afterward, we visited the Ravana Cave, followed by a tour of the Halpe Tea Plantation. We ended the day at the newly opened Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, where we had a tour with a monk and finished with a cup of tea at a small tea house next to the monastery. It was a perfect way to wrap up the day.

After visiting all the sights in Ella, we moved on to the next stretch of our itinerary near Yala National Park. We honestly didn’t spend much time in the village, as we were mostly passing through by shuttle. However, from what I could see, Ella was full of trendy cafes, shops, and small restaurants, attracting many tourists. The next time I’m there, I hope to experience more of the city life and enjoy the typical tourist experience, rather than just being driven from one destination to the next.

I had the chance to explore a bit on the first evening but was too tired and ended up staying at the hotel instead.
