Rooms range from ocean-view rooms to larger suites. The restaurants include Galáxia Skyfood and Terreiro, which focuses on local flavors.

The Laurea Spa is inspired by Madeira’s Laurissilva forest and has a heated pool and wellness facilities. There is also a gym.

The hotel has venues for weddings, events and meetings. At 306€ for two it costs less than Reid’s Palace, Terrabona and Quinta Jardins do Lago, and it is rated 9.2.

Quinta da Casa Branca

Quinta da Casa Branca is in Funchal and started as a family estate. The Leacock family first used the land to grow vines and banana trees, and their name lives on in the Leacock wine brand. It became a design hotel in 1998 and is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

The modern building was designed by the architect João Favila Menezes. The gardens have a wide range of tropical plants and trees, and the hotel has sea views.

Rooms include Garden Rooms with private terraces and Manor House Suites with classical décor. The Dining Room restaurant serves à la carte and table d’hôte meals in the Manor House.

The Frangipani Spa and Health Club has a gym and relaxation facilities, and the estate also has a historic villa. At 343€ for two it is the second most expensive of the comfort hotels, with a 9.2 rating.

Quinta Vale Vitis is in the wine-growing valley of São Vicente, on the north coast. The estate covers about 9,000 square meters and is surrounded by vineyards and organic farms.

Breakfast is served, and there is a bar, a pool, a sauna, a contrast bath and a gym. The estate farms organically. At 104€ for two it is the second most expensive of the budget hotels, with a 9.5 rating.

The hotel has 126 rooms and suites, including the Churchill and Bernard Shaw suites, heated pools and a platform for swimming in the sea. Afternoon tea is served on the terrace. William, which held a Michelin star in the 2025 guide, is the fine-dining restaurant, and Ristorante Villa Cipriani serves Italian food.

Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

Terrabona Nature & Vineyards is a wine estate on the north coast, in the Boaventura parish. The owners bought Quinta do Cardo with tourism in mind, and the vineyard that came with the land turned into an award-winning wine project. Its Terra Bona white has won bronze medals at the IWC and Decanter competitions in London.

Guests stay in villas among the vineyards, next to the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The estate offers yoga sessions, private rooftop dinners and vineyard tours.

Other activities include birdwatching, painting, hiking and canyoning. At 390€ for two it has the highest rating on this list (9.8) and costs less than Reid’s Palace.

Quinta Jardins do Lago

Quinta Jardins do Lago is a boutique hotel on a hillside near Funchal, in an 18th-century estate that was once the residence of General Beresford during the Napoleonic Wars. It has 32 rooms and suites, all facing the gardens.

The botanical garden covers 2.5 hectares and has over 500 plant species. The Beresford Restaurant serves Madeiran and international food in a historic setting, and the Colombo Bistro is by the pool. Other facilities are a heated pool, a gym, a croquet lawn and a library.

At 371€ for two it has the same 9.6 rating as Reid’s Palace and costs 183€ less.

Quinta do Furão is a four-star hotel on a cliff in Santana, on the north coast, with gardens and organic vineyards. The property covers 5 hectares, 3 of them vineyards, and the wine is celebrated at the September Wine Festival.

The hotel was renovated in 2020 and has 65 rooms, from Vineyards Rooms with garden views to Suites with sea and mountain views. Higher categories have Nespresso machines.

The restaurant has been open since 1993 and serves Madeiran and international dishes made with local and organic ingredients. There is also a pub with a fireplace, a wine cellar and a bakery.

1905 Zino’s Palace is a restored 19th-century building that has been a summer home, a school and a primary school. It is now a hotel with nine rooms.

The Friends Suite Ocean View has a private terrace and suits families. The Cosy Room has a king-size bed and a workspace, the Classic Double/Twin Room overlooks terraced banana plantations, and the Suite Ocean View has wooden floors, a king-size bed and ocean views.

Breakfast has ocean views. Lunch and dinner are served from Tuesday to Saturday, there is a lighter snack menu on Sundays and Mondays, and afternoon tea is also available. The hotel has a swimming pool and gardens. At 256€ for two it has the same 9.2 rating as Quinta da Casa Branca and costs 87€ less.

Escarpa - The Madeira Hideaway

Escarpa is 100 meters above the Atlantic and a 1 km walk from the village of Ponta do Sol, among banana trees. The design is contemporary and minimalist.

The rooms and villas have sea views, and breakfast is served at the Pool Cottage with locally sourced produce.

You can choose between an Ocean View Room, an Ocean View Villa and an Infinity Pool Villa. At 244€ for two it has a 9.4 rating, the second highest among the comfort hotels after Three House (9.6).

Three House Hotel

Three House is in a historic art deco building in central Funchal. It has 13 apartments, a rooftop pool and a cocktail bar and restaurant, and its elevated position gives views of the city, sea and mountains.

The rooftop has a heated saltwater pool and shaded sofas, and the bar serves coffee and light bites prepared by Chef Mauricio Faria. The third-floor restaurant serves local and international dishes cooked on a Josper grill, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

At 219€ for two it is the cheapest of the comfort hotels and has the highest rating among them (9.6).

Aqua Natura Bay is a four-star hotel in Porto Moniz, on the north coast, with views of the Atlantic and the mountains. It is close to the natural swimming pools and the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The wellness center has an outdoor heated pool, an indoor pool, a sauna, a jacuzzi, a Turkish bath and massages. It also offers fish therapy and nutritionist services.

Guests can book the Madeira Nature Experience, which includes diving with sharks, rays and morays at the Madeira Aquarium.

Socalco Nature Calheta

Socalco Nature Calheta is a rural tourism and farm stay on the terraced hillside above Calheta. Guests can take cooking classes, help with farm chores and go on dining tours.

The rooms are spread across several houses. Casa do Boticário is a pastel-colored villa once used for agricultural storage, Casa Salão has panoramic sea views, and Casa da Cascata is by a waterfall. Casa do Caseiro, Casa da Palha and Casa da Gruta are the other houses, and there are standard rooms in Vila Boal and Vila Verdelho.

Dona I Apartments at Botanical Garden

Dona I Apartments at Botanical Garden is close to the Madeira Botanical Garden, a short drive from the Madeira Film Experience and a 25-minute walk from the Madeira Story Center Museum. The apartment has a terrace with mountain views.
