Where to Catch the Train to Ella?
To catch the train to Ella, you’ll need to head to Colombo Fort Railway Station, the main train station in Colombo. From there, you can board a train heading toward Badulla, with Ella being one of the key stops on the route. The journey from Colombo to Ella is famous for its stunning scenery, especially as you approach the hill country.
Alternatively, if you’re coming from Kandy, you can catch a train to Nanu Oya Station (the closest station to Ella), and then take a short taxi ride to reach Ella itself. Trains from both Colombo and Kandy offer amazing views, and if you’re lucky enough to get a window seat, it’s considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world!

Do i Need to Reserve the Train to Ella?
It’s not mandatory to reserve a train to Ella, but I highly recommend doing so, especially during peak tourist seasons. While Colombo to Ella and Kandy to Ella routes are quite popular, trains can fill up quickly, especially the Second and First Class compartments, which offer more comfort and better views.
Third Class seats are usually available, but they can be crowded, and you may not have a guaranteed seat.
Reserving in advance through the official Sri Lanka Railways website or 12Go ensures a guaranteed seat and a more comfortable journey.
If you’re traveling on a busy holiday or during high season, it’s definitely a good idea to book ahead. You can also purchase tickets at the station, but I recommend getting there early to secure your spot if you’re not reserving online.

My Experience in Ella
As part of the press trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, we arrived in Ella after visiting Colombo, the Sinharaja Rainforest, and Ratnapura, the City of Gems. Our goal was to explore the hill country, starting with a visit to Diyaluma and Ravana Falls. Next, we visited the Nine Arches Bridge, which was an amazing experience. Although it was crowded, it was still a delight. Since we were traveling with the tourism board, we had drone permits, and it became quite the adventure to capture the best shots we could as a group, especially of the famous train crossing the bridge.

To add to the excitement, as we arrived, a light drizzle began, and we weren’t sure if we’d be able to fly the drones. Despite that, we decided to go ahead. With at least four drones in the air, it felt like a military operation. Each drone operator was planning their shots carefully, making sure not to overlap with others and avoid crashes, all while keeping an eye on the rain. The train was running late, so we were starting to run low on battery power. We decided to land the drones before the train arrived, sending Ricardo to check the timing from the bridge. Once he gave us the signal, we launched the drones again and managed to capture all the shots before the train stopped on the bridge.
It was a fun yet stressful operation. As soon as we finished, the rain picked up significantly, and we quickly retrieved the drones. After the Nine Arches Bridge, our day came to an end.
The Highlights near Ella
The next morning, we woke up early to catch the sunrise over Ella Gap before hiking to Little Adam’s Peak. Afterward, we visited the Ravana Cave, followed by a tour of the Halpe Tea Plantation. We ended the day at the newly opened Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, where we had a tour with a monk and finished with a cup of tea at a small tea house next to the monastery. It was a perfect way to wrap up the day.
After visiting all the sights in Ella, we moved on to the next stretch of our itinerary near Yala National Park. We honestly didn’t spend much time in the village, as we were mostly passing through by shuttle. However, from what I could see, Ella was full of trendy cafes, shops, and small restaurants, attracting many tourists. The next time I’m there, I hope to experience more of the city life and enjoy the typical tourist experience, rather than just being driven from one destination to the next.
I had the chance to explore a bit on the first evening but was too tired and ended up staying at the hotel instead.
